STATEMENT FROM MAYOR GOULD RE: WORK AT APPIN SITE 13.11.2024
Alert issued Nov 13, 2024, 8:28 PM
Council has been advised of concerns raised by a community member in relation to a site at Appin. I have been advised by Council staff that a contractor is carrying out work on behalf of Sydney Water and that these works involve the installation of a sewer line to service the new development.
Sydney Water has a short term license for use of the site and needs to comply with all laws for its use (including around contamination management) and return the site to its original condition once the works are complete.
Staff have advised that the land is able to be utilised for the purpose of the installation of sewerage and associated works both under the land use zoning for the site as well as the relevant plan of management. Additionally, Sydney Water also has access to the Infrastructure SEPP.
Notwithstanding this, Council’s Compliance team is currently reviewing the activities on site, while various other teams across Council are examining the different aspects of this matter to ensure that everything has been done appropriately. The contractor has voluntarily ceased works at our request, until the review is complete.
We understand the concerns of community members and are taking this matter seriously.
